Here is another piece of info for us all. A friend has had the same problem with her 07 Mustang GT. The battery went out twice in just months. Seems there has been a problem with something called the 'smart box', a unit that shuts all power down to a minimum when you shut the car off, enough to keep radio setting in memory and stuff like that. When you open the door, it jumps the power levels up so you are ready to go when you turn the key.And since the radio is one of the biggest power users when the car is off, it makes sense that if the smart box is not properly managing the power, it will drain a battery in days. I confirmed this with my dealer. He has already seen a few bad boxes.

I had the battery issue several times. Since I have started to push the un-lock button before I get out and park the car for several weeks, I have not had the problem. I did this because I heard it had to do with the anti-theft. My car stays in the garage so I can leave it unlocked.

Remember, when you drive the doors lock. You may unlock the driver side, however the passenger side imay still be locked. By pushing the unlock, all doors are unlocked.

Not sure if this is really a solution or just luck. Car has sat for three weeks, no issue with this MO.

I'll try to make a long story short. Been fighting battery drain since last September. Dealer charged me to tell me nothing was wrong. Three weeks ago the car all of a sudden started over charging and put out 18.4 volts. Had it flatbeded to the dealer (they said not to drive it), the regulator went bad in the alternator, but they also made a discovery! The alternator also had an "open" circut which they said created the battery drain. I have a shut-off on the negative side of the battery, I took my Fluke meter and put on each side of the shut-off, backed the knob, and after about 1/2 hour when all the realys go to sleep, sure enough it went down to 25 miliamps right where it should be. I feel confident my problem is solved. Bottom line my problem was in the alternator all the time. Seems like everybody has a different resolve for this issue, but I thought I had to share this. I actually got Ford engineering involved at one point.

I believe it helps but I still use a tender.

I also now use a battery tender. Easy solution and wire the connector plug to the battery for quick connections.

I have had to replace two batteries in two of my Shelbys. I bought one for the GT-H two years ago and it was dead again so I took it back to Autozone where it was purchased and they replaced it for free. Apparently they will replace the battery (not pro rata) for free for 3 years. I liked that deal so much I bought a new one for the KR which was on its last leg. I figure if they'll replace it for free every 3 years I'll never need to buy another battery.

Ever since I've consiously turned the radio off before I turn the car off, I've never had a problem again. So that was certainly the issue in my case. My battery would used to drain in three days, and now it can set for a couple months with no problem. I'm still using the original battery now on my 2006. At least it's the correct Ford Battery and I've never changed it since I've owned it. Not sure if Hertz ever had to change it, but I doubt it.

Make sure you take out any CD's. First couple of years I did not remove them and even with a battery tender it would not start. Last year I removed CD's and Navigation Disc and it started. Rick

I'm having an issue with my battery going dead after leaving my car in the garage for more than a week (or so) without running it. I remember reading on the old site of people having similiar issues. It's happened to me twice now. I have yet to take it into the Ford dealer, planning on hopefully getting it in this weekend (depending on the weather). I have a feeling they'll just give me a new battery and that will be it. And in a few weeks I'll be right back there for the same issue. Has anyone taken in their GT-H for this issue and what did Ford do about it? Any feed back would be great!

Mine ate 4 batteries and NO battery tender is going to fix it. The problem is the radio especially if you have the Shaker 500 unit. I had mine looked at from every angle and it was a flaw in the head unit and FORD kept giving me a new battery and my car kept eating them. Took head unit out no more issues... I am fairly certain FORD knew about this and kept quiet

All this talk about battery drain and wouldn't you know it this morning was my turn. Yep insert key turn to start and DEAD. Not completely but dead enough not to turn over.
Now I have followed all the recommendations and I did run it a week ago. So the trusty old trickle charger will be a daily thing to do. :(

I am trying something new for the dead battery problem. I replaced a relay that is for Delay Accessory. Ford calls it a Multi Function relay. Its located in the passenger side kick panel. The cost was inexpensive for this experiment. $23. I left the radio on and will check this weekend to see if it did it's job. Cross your fingers!

Eight cars, eight battery tenders. That includes the lawn tractor also. All have the tender where the plug stays on the battery. Better than gator clips. Our everyday cars are the only vehicles without the tender. The only one that has gone dead so far is the GT-H before we put the tender on it (we just purchased the car not too long ago) I have read else where this "could" be a problem with these (GT-H) cars. Our 06 Super Snake never goes dead.

First, congrats on the purchase of 131! I am sure you have read all the previous post on this thread. My last posts seems to be working #63 and #64. Now that winter is coming I will keep the battery on the trickle all season. I think the small cost of that relay will also help you. Of course till you buy another charger keep the radio off.

Well its been a couple of weeks and so far so good! Now I really have to cross my fingers and toes. This might be the answer to our problem.

After 12 days with radio and Sirius head unit left on no battery drain. I hope this helps all GT users.
Again replaceing the Multi Function Relay, an inexpensive part the battery drain problem is GONE!
