Several people have asked me  "what should I say to the dealer when I go in and talk to them about my clutch problem?".

This is what I would do.

Go in and be polite, and if the service advisor does not know about the problem, you will have to school him up. (Have the TSB in your back pocket too)

Tell him that you know for a fact that:

1. The first 11 months of GT500 production cars did not get any Teflon lube on the input shaft and clutch hub.

2. Tell him that you know your clutch hub and input shaft have a bunch of surface rust and corrosion on them because the lube never was applied.

3. Tell him that you know that the rusty shaft and clutch hub cause the clutch to not release on time and drag.

4. Tell him that you know that clutch drag causes your syncros to remain loaded with engine torque and that is why your gears grind inbetween shifts.

5. Tell him that you know the transmission  input shaft splines have been revised to be a little wider and broached smoother so it will release on time from the clutch hub.

6. Tell him that you know the clutch hub has been revised to be made out of nickle  to prevent the clutch hub from rusting.

7. Tell him that you know your flywheel is made out of nodular iron and it does not dissapate the heat very well so it has warped on you and is toasting your clutch and causing your car to have clutch chatter.

8. Tell him that you know the new flywheel is made out of 4100 series steel and is much thicker to take care of the heat dissapation and warpage problem.

If that does not work.....go to a different dealer. :banghead:

Okay, so I have an 08 with 1300+ miles on it.  Haven't even had it a week and didn't know about the TSB until reading it today.  I have noticed a chatter (or gear noise) and a high release on the clutch when starting from stop at low rpm.  Are these symptoms?

I know this car is low mileage, but I know clutches and they should act or sound like that.  Would being a garaged rarely driven car contribute to the onset of rust and such on the input shafts?

Should I just ride it out until I start having bigger problems?  Does the TSB cover 2nd owner cars?  I still have fac warranty, plus Ford Platinum Protection for 72 Mo. and 75K miles...

What about a little gear noise when sitting idle and in neutral?  I noticed this the other day.  I was sitting waiting on a buddy and I heard noise in (or in the vicinity of the gearbox) that would subside when the clutch was engaged.

Is this normal too?

All this TSB stuff has me pretty paranoid now...

I had two symptoms that enabled me to get the dealer to proceed with the TSB.

1)  On cold days until everything hit normal operating temps, I would experience some difficulty shifting from 1st to 2nd and into reverse.  The car was this way from the first day I owed it.

2)  The clutch would continue to hiss (ever so slightly) when the clutch pedal was fully depressed to the floor.  This symptom started to develop late last fall with about 4,400 miles on the odometer and it was extremely hard to hear unless the car was sitting in an enclosed space such as my garage.

We have a BINGO - This is the symptom that I found 2 years ago and SVT told me "YOUR CLUTCH IS DRAGGING". They then fixed my car.

I have owned 2 Shelby GT500's and have loved them both. The only problem I have encountered with my beloved Hot Rods has been the clutch. The have been touchy and difficult for my wife and I to deal with and make smooth takeoffs next to impossible. After reading the unlimited problems and the time spent and on and on (with other members) I decided on my 2009 to go with an aftermarket clutch.

With the performance enhancements we chose for our Shelby I decided to install a RAM clutch and aluminum flywheel. The setup is good for 1000 or so H.P. and they are locally manufactured. This is not the route we wanted to take. After over 1000 miles on the new setup I have NO regrets. The drivability is incredible, very smooth takeoffs, It is almost impossible to mess up taking off - no special techniques that I have heard from so many others. With the mods and upgrades we have done it is the smoothest takeoff if you are gently easing into traffic or doing a wild launch type takeoff.

I really would have liked to stay stock but the time, effort, trips, arguments I have seen on T/S for the 1 and a half years convinced me that this is probably the only problem I would have with my Shelby. I am glad a lot of members have gotten satifaction with theirs.

I am not patient with the run around the dealers have been giving to Shelby owners.

Has anyone else taken this route? I guess I can always reinstall the stock clutch. I just don't think I would want to!

I hope I didn't put comments (on aftermarket clutch) in wrong place. I'll take advice and the beatings.

Thanks! I don't feel so bad for doing it now. I love the car - hated the clutch. Went with RAM - don't know if that is the best option but it is working great with 1000+ miles on it. I can really control takoffs with the extra power I have. Ready for some M/T's and the track maybe.

Thanks Grabber,

I have a big problem, my GT 500 was purchased in May  08. Nov 09 noticed clutch slipage, 20,000 miles. Took the car to a local dealer, they blamed me for riding the clutch changed the clutch assemby and charged me 4,200.00 canadian.
A month late saw the TSB thanks to this site, and have repeated ASKED FOR A REFUND. The dealer is being evasive, so I called my dealer that sold me the car in Leavenworth Kansas, they are prearranging the TSB work to be done, and on Friday February 26, 2010, I issued a Statement of Claim and sent it via registered mail to get my refund. The Dealer in Kansas has been very helpful, and simply said this local dealer misdiagnosed and should refund my cash.

Thanks to all who have provided info.

Third clutch currently being installed after 27,500.  This one will be the new 2010-2011 kit.  Really hoping this one is the ticket.

As Grabber pointed out, at the end of the day, its all about the dealer.  If the dealer is a customer first type, you won't have any problem with Ford if you are experiencing any of the clutch/flywheel issues.  If your dealer is the wishy-washy type, you are in trouble.

The bottom line, buy and service your car at a dealer that has integrity, a dealer that stands by their sale and most importantly, makes Ford stand by their product.

I didn't see anything in the TSB posted on this board regarding clutches that slip.  Did I miss something?

I thought that the TSB was for clutches that did not DISengage when they were supposed to, not for clutches that did not ENgage when they are supposed to.

:headscratch:

My clutch is slipping, so if anyone knows something that can get my clutch replaced under warranty, I would be grateful for the information.  :sos:
