Has anyone installed one of these units? How difficult is it to install? Is it worth it?

I spoke with the project engineer at AutoMeter - who makes it.

They're up-rated versions of the existing individual gauge products, but with an integrated wiring harness and different illumination properties geared more toward "factory" operation. The oil pressure gauge does require connection through a sender that has to be installed - rather than just plugged-in. Have no idea how it's affixed to the dash - by adhesive or screws. If it requires drilling a hole, I'm going to make damn sure I use a hole size I can cover with a rubber plug - if I ever want to remove them.

Someone suggested double sided tape. I found a roll at my local Ford dealer, cheap (same stuff used on the Ford Motor Co. side scoops and the Shelby quarter window scoops, with red protective tape).

If I use the pod, I will double tape it. I REFUSE to cut holes in my dashpad just for a gauge pod.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why you can get the skeleton with no gauges for $120 then add your own, but if you get their guages it costs $1000 more. $1000 for three gauges?

Oh I read it......guess I am just not impressed that it comes with a wiring harness and some cool lights. Hopefully one of you guys will take the plunge and post some video. Just seems to me like they are way overcharging, but hey maybe it is more impressive than it looks. :headscratch:

Is it just me or is there a recess in the dash where that pod sits? Is that present on all '10+?

Does anyone know if this just plugs into the OBD2 port. It seems like the middle gauge - Performance Monitoring one woud lneed that flexibilty.

The performance gauge (DPIC) is independent of the OBD port. It's simply an accelerometer, like the old Veri-Com units (you suction-cupped them to the windshield) that were popular in the 1990's, though it is obviously a much-updated version.

The Aeroforce gauge is the one that plugs into the OBD port. I've been contemplating the Boss gauge pod, but the price w/gauges is just silly.

I will likely just buy the housing and add an oil pressure gauge, a DPIC and an Aeroforce gauge. The Aeroforce can read coolant temp and also double as a code reader. It too has the same performance-measurement functions as a DPIC, but I think it would be nice to have temp, oil and DPIC all at once.

In an earlier post, I suggested double-sided tape to mount it, as I refuse to put a hole in my dash to screw it down. Has anyone actually ordered the pod housing yet? I'd be curious to know if the instructions from Ford tell you to screw it to the dash......

Hi all,
I've been doing some more research on this gauge pack and have decided to get the Boss LS pod and put two Aeroforce gauges in it and a Ford Racing DPIC.

Turns out the Aeroforce gauges can read wideband air/fuel ratio info directly from the OBD of 2011 and later Mustangs, with no additional sensor required. Add in an oil pressure sensor and having two Aeroforces (reading two values each, simultaneously) will let you read A/F mixture, oil pressure, coolant temp and another value (inlet air temp before or after intercooler, boost, cylinder head temp, etc) at the same time.

I read how the Aeroforce has a performance calculator (0-60, qtr mile, eighth mile, etc) like the DPIC, but it derives it's values from the OBD data, so wheelspin, tire size variation, etc. will make for inaccurate readings. The FR DPIC uses an accelorometer, so wheelspin will properly penalize your ET, and the DPIC also can do G readings for braking/cornering, which I did not see that the Aeroforce can do. Two Aeroforce gauges with custom SVT-logo faces and the oil pressure sensor are $500, the DPIC is $200 and the pod itself is $90. That beats the $1200-$1300 Ford wants.

For installation, I've looked at several pictures of Boss LS models on eBay and have a good idea how to replicate dash placement. Unfortunately, no pics showed a view of the backside of the gauge. I was hoping to see the routing of the wiring to the gauge pod. I'm assuming Ford brings the wiring up through the dash directly under the pod and that the pod is also screwed to the dash.

I've already been under the dash on my car and it is possible to feed the wiring into the side of the defroster manifold (through the foam expansion joint between the defroster manifold and the main air box), snake it up and out the defroster openings on the dash and then make a short, straight run into the back of the pod. I will mount the pod with with DS tape. No screws/holes for me......

What would help me a bunch is if someone with access to a LS Boss could take some pictures of the BACK of the gauge pod, possibly by taking a pic through the windshield or by holding a camera over the pod and shooting downward, so that I can see if the wiring comes up through the ductwork from the factory (I doubt it) or if the wiring is invisible from behind the pod (more likely) becvause it's drilled/wired from underneath. If by some miracle the wiring is exposed as-installed from the factory, any pictures of how it is done would be really helpful.

Thanks!!

PS- in a case of supreme irony, the Boss 302 cars w/o the LS option have no oil pressure gauge at all on the dash cluster. Granted, the oil pressure gauge on my Shelby is a an idiot-light-with-a-pointer, but I'm surprised the Boss didn't get the volts/oil/temp/fuel cluster on the GT....

Be careful with the double sided tape. Many SuperSnake owners have had their gauge pods come loose on hot days during heavy cornering. The sun beating down thru the windshield will melt the adhesive.

When you decide to take the plunge on this if you don't mind take some photos along the way of how you installed it. I am thinking about installing one as well and could use some ideas on mounting and running the wires. :lurk:

Alright folks....just received the dash pod today and per the directions you would have to drill your dash to run the wires. Otherwise you would have to run the wires to the vent exposed on the top of the dash which would look pretty cheesy. Probably going to abandon this idea unless there are some creative thinkers out there that can come up with a work around that looks nice. Thoughts?

guys ford had to put holes in the dash to install the pod correctly, so if you decide to install it ,in order to do it right you need to drill holes ,the pod looks great in the boss LS why worry about the holes , why would you take it off once its installed , most of the installs are for looks anyway the car has enough gauges from factory ,so most likley if you or myself install this pod its not comming off imo

Only ordered the pod so no idea about the complete kit with gauges. The included cutting template shows (4) 1/8" holes for the mounting screws and the wiring hole is about 1" in diameter. I guess the holes are not a big deal if you are going to keep it installed. I just like to be able to return to stock if I so desire. Once this is done.....it's done.

When mine arrives, I plan to alter the template to hopefully be consistent with some ready-made rubber plugs I could use, if necessary to at least cover the holes if I want to remove it in the future.

What do you have to remove to install this once the holes are made? Does anyone know how easy is is to run the cables, plug and play?

There is a harness connection, but the oil pressure gauge at least is driven by a sender unit.
