Has anybody had any experience with the Shelby product? I've heard universal praise for MGW, but would prefer to remain braind-faithful if I won't be compromising.

Thanks in advance.

MGW best shifter I have EVER had! beautiful quality! I would also prefer to have everything on the car shelby but this is one of the best mods you will do. No slop with this shifter.

It appears that Shelby and MGW could not come to a agreement.

The new Shelby shifters are very obviously Drake shifters with a Shelby logo etched on them.

You can not go wrong with the MGW. Don't buy an inferior shifter just because Shelby's name is on it.

I have an MGW in my 2011, it rocks. Feels "right".

I come from a fab machine shop background with a *perfect* QA record , so I'm a mfg snob. My opinion of their parts is that they are well machined and great fit/finish. I didn't expect this sort of quality out of a niche product so I was impressed.

Find somebody who doesn't like theirs.

Here is another vote for the MGW Shifter. I had one on my 01 Cobra, and just had one installed on my 08 GT500 (along with a new clutch). MGW's quality is top notch. I had heard the rumors that the "new" 6 speed shifter that Shelby was going to offer would be the MGW one, so I waited. Once I saw that Shelby went with a different manufactor (a poor decision in my opinion) I ordered the MGW. I have since driven approx. 1000 miles and I know I made the right choice. The MGW shifter rocks!

How noticeable is the noise that is introduced into the cabin by a MGW shifter, anyway? Is it a buzz, or rattle, or what? I have read somewhere that the bushings cause transmission of some sort of noise.

Any truth to this? Would like to hear from those who have had one in use for a while.

Thanks

I've had mine installed for a few months and there is some minor increase in noise inside the cabin. There is no buzzing or rattling, but you can hear more drivetrain noise. I got replacement rubber bushings from MGW and used dynamat on the console which helped.

As other posters have noted, the shifter is really great and worth the tradeoff.

You will NOT regret it (if you're talking about buying a MGW).

My biggest complaint about the MGW? 5th gear is a little hard to find and 6th is harder. 1st through 4th are like a old 4-spd shifter. You CAN NOT miss 3rd or 4th, even on a full throttle power shift. And THAT.....is what is important to me when drag racing. On the street, I rarely use 5th or 6th so no biggie. On the Hwy, I'm just careful going for 5th (tried to put it in R one time and APPARENTY my reverse lock-out isn't functioning!) and have to work a little to find 6th.

I'm getting BETTER at finding 5th, as I get more experience with the shifter. I used to have to hunt around for it, now that I'm consious of the "problem" I can hit 5th about 9 times out of 10 (without having to "hunt" for it).

You will LOVE the MGW.

I haven't heard that from anyone regarding the Shelby/Drake shifter and that's unfortunate. I had high hopes for Shelby when Roger said they were going to start using MGW on all future Super Snakes.

Question to those who has the MGW installed: Does the intallation has to be done bt a professional mechanic or is it easy to do it by myself? Any advise or indications will be appreciated.

easy....depends on your skill level...certain parts can be a PITA though....but is very doable by the novice home garage dude....i used my ramps, which just made it a pain climbing under and back out...a lift is better, but not required.

I have not noticed any increase in noise from my MGW shifter, I have it set at 5 turns. I have no problems finding any gear. On cold mornings (40-45 dgrs) the shifter is a little notchy until it get's warmed up. As far a DIY install, I have watched the MGW install video (it's on their website) and you probably can do it yourself, I had my local shop do the install when I had the new clutch put in. You won't be sorry going with the MGW Shifter.

Before anybody runs out and spends hundreds of dollars on an aftermarket shifter and the labor to install it, I'd advise trying what I did. When I got my 2011 SVTPP Shelby, the shifter felt rubbery and I was having the 1-2 upshift grind problem. I was planning on getting an MGW shifter, but decided to tear down the stock set-up first to see if I could improve it for less $$$. Lo and behold, the stock stick has more rubber on it than a high school senior on prom night. :censored:

I realized I had been having the 1-2 grind because I thought the car was in second gear and had been releasing the clutch too early, while in reality the over-rubber-isolated stock shifter stick was not transmitting my force on the stick to the actual shifter arm. The trans was not fully in second gear when the clutch was released, hence the grind.

I bought a Hurst chrome stick (#7201) off eBay for $40. It came w/ 2 bolts with bushings that adapted the metric bolts to the 3/8" holes on the shifter and it also came with the rubber boot adapter. Shifter stick has 3/8" coarse thread for your choice of knob. I bought a Roush shifter boot from JEGS for ~$30 and it fit the boot adaptor like a glove. I removed the stock stick and all the rubber isolators, installed the Hurst stick (bolting it directly to the stock shifter w/ no rubber isolation), the Roush boot and a Hurst T-handle I had lying around my garage. Total install time was about 60 mins and was done entirely from the driver's seat.

Result is an expenditure of ~$75 for a shifter that works with the rock-solid feel of a bolt-action rifle. It was an unbelieveable difference over the rubber mush crap that came from the factory. It has virtually no rattle or vibration and the 1-2 grind issue is gone. It cranks off 1-2 upshifts with ease. I did re-discover the fact that the aluminum t-handle gets a bit warm in a sunny parking lot. I also have about a half-dozen shift knobs I've acquired over the years, including a vintage 1960's-era Muncie pattern knob and a Mopar-esque pistol grip, so I switch them up from time to time for some variety.

So, before you throw the baby out with the bathwater, the problem w/ the factory shifter is the rubber isolation that they install. They totally over-do it, so that there is never a complaint from somebody who buys a Shelby and complains about shifter vibration because they expect a Rolls Royce level of cabin noise......just throw out the bath water (the rubber isolation) and keep the baby. You'll save a lot of $$$$. If you don't like it, you can always subsequently buy an aftermarket shifter and re-sell the Hurst stick on eBay.......

I haven't heard that from anyone regarding the Shelby/Drake shifter and that's unfortunate. I had high hopes for Shelby when Roger said they were going to start using MGW on all future Super Snakes.

Shame on me.

I ASSUMED that Shelby was going to start *selling* MGW shifters after I saw Roger Sorel's post that said ALL Super Snakes would start coming with MGW shifters after such-and-such date.

When the new Shelby (made by Drake) shifter came out I ASSUMED (ASS-U-ME!) that Shelby and MGW didn't reach a deal and/or that Shelby was NOT going to use the MGW in all Super Snakes as Roger reported.

I just inspected a brand new 2012 Super Snake built to base specs and low and behold....it includes a MGW shifter!

I'm very surprised that Roger did not join into this thread and spank me for ASSUMING such a thing and I'm thankful he didn't. So I'll "spank" myself and eat a little crow while I'm at it.

Now, for those that are looking at the Shelby/Drake shifter vs. the MGW (or "brand loyalty")...if Shelby American sees fit to put a MGW into their Super Snakes....why would you want to use a different shifter???

Yes, I know. That's a very "back handed" way of eating crow, bashing the SHELBY shifter while admitting my stupidity but seriously, that isn't my intention. My intention is to inform and set the record straight.
