Vote no for selfish reasons. The only thing that will happen is to detract from the value of the 2007-08 original SGTs. That will only cause hard feelings amongst the original owners and we deserve some loyalty. Then people will sell their 07-08 SGTs to upgrade and bring the price down even more. How about an in between mod for the 2007/2008. Less than a SC but add cams, headers, intake, etc. Bring our HP/TQ to where it should have been from the factory.

Depending on the build numbers it will be just like in 07 and 08. Lots of cars left on the lots well after they arrived for sale. My car was shipped at the end of July 07 and not purchase until Mid Feb of 08. (Luckily mine was a showroom queen). After that there were still numerous 07's still on the car lots being scorched in the sun for months. My vote is go with a different product let the 06 GTH, 07 & 08 Shelby GT stand alone and have thier own place in Shelby History.

What would be the market threshold for a Shelby GT from price point? Let's take a dream build of what the Shelby GT was:

Open the enitre color pallett and coupe of convertible configuration:

  • Base 2013 5.0 GT 400 A package
  • Track Package (helical 3:73, brembo brake pkg., FR3 suspension, HD radiator, engine oil cooler, 19"x9" aluminum wheels, summer performance compound tires)
  • Short throw shifter
  • Billet grille
  • CS rear fascia/front fascia
  • Ford Racing performance exhaust
  • Adjustable panhard bar
  • Ford Racing front brake cooling ducts
  • Over the top stripes
  • Rear spoiler delete
  • Shelby lettering on the upper trunk
  • Rocker stripe
  • Cold air kit with tune
  • Shelby badging and CSM as was the SGT
  • Painted stripes as an option
What would you expect to pay for the package excluding the Track Package?

Roger

No Automatics?
How will the performance compare to the Boss?
With the exception of the badging etc, there would have to be a compelling reason to choose it over the Boss or it's successor; be it price or performance.

For me, a 2012-13 Shelby with BOSS level on track performance at a BOSS price would be the ticket. Give it its own Shelby backed racing history and it will be a winner. I want to buy a Shelby that Shelby actually races.

Items #1 and #2 add up to just under $40K (including Destination Charges) for a 2013 Mustang Premium w/Track Package...
The Initial Price for the GTS Upgrade (V-8) on a 2012 Mustang is $12K...

Right off the bat you are looking at $52K before any of the other "Shelby" performance upgrades... Not hating on the concept of a "new" SGT because I just traded mine in on a BOSS... But I do like the fact that FORD and others actually use the BOSS 302 (R and S models) as a Race Car on a weekly basis... And if I want or need replacement performance parts, they come right off the shelf from FRPP...

Lots can be said of the old adage "Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday"... Just sayin'

Well as they say "sleep on it "so I did and I say NO !!! Let's see what's on the market (1 )GT500 650hp, (2) Boss 302 444hp ( 3) .Mustang GT loaded Boss options. The GT500 will be the talk of the town with very few takers for a Shelby GT ( baby Shelby again ). So why go down that road ? Your 50th annv. Shelby and the 1000 hp Gt500 will keep you busy, don't you think ? On paper a Shelby GT looks good but there is no maket @ this time for one. Don't forget the ZL1 and 392 also coming to market.

I'm now wondering if the GTS is bombing on sales and was a mistake. Roger does make some good points in what the car should have along with others. No scoops this go round or why not do a CDC shaker system with cold air induction.

I honestly think its a terrible idea. Like said by someone else. I think that us SGT owners deserve a little loyalty, and making new pre-titled SGTs ever couple years is not that at all. That will only devalue our 07-08s (which are finally starting to settle) as some of us sell to upgrade. At some point making a buck or two off our nameplate can't be worth hurting the values of already loyal Shelby owners, just to gain a few more.

Shelby Auto can make anything they want. but please for the love of God, call it something else!

P.S. I don't matter if they make a new Shelby GT or not, in the looks department it can not hold a candle to ours.

Edited by michschi, 05 May 2012 - 07:54 PM.

That is why we have company cars, so we don't have to drive ours that way!

Resales Values....... I may piss off a few people but, the old man never built a single car on the idea it would be valuable to some person in the future with too much money. The idea/hope that any of the modern Shelbys will increase in monetary value is lost on me.

Drive, race, customize your car. Don't worry about it's resale value, Shelby will build more. That's kind of their business model.

I owned my first Shelby a 66 GT350 in 1982. I paid $10K for her and put about 4000 miles in 14 years . I sold her for $36K in 1996.Then went and bought a few Boss's. Some of the low production low mileage Shelby's will be the first to hit bottom and then rise. The 10 year mark will be the starting point . I have been doing this for 33 years ( GM products also ) and I am not the only one that agrees with this . If you build the shit out of a certain model forget it ( not RARE ). Leave the SGT's , GT-H's and KR's alone, no more period. People in the future want something they can't buy anymore and can't get. Car people like us like having a limited rare Shelby with a story and pedigree. Most important we love the SGT for it's performance , looks and don't need the most powerfull Shelby on the market. Given time the SGT will be something special. Work on your GT350's and wait for the new Mustang then go for it .If you have not seen it ask Ford then figure out what your plans are. Keep an eye on Roush !!--- The new 650 HP GT500 and Boss 302 will overshadow anything you do with the 5.0. Don't forget the ZL1 and 392.

Ford has already copied the 2007 GT500 body and given it to every 2013 mustang owner.
Shelby fixed all the SGT problems with the new GT350.
Ford has the Boss 302 which Shelby would have to out do.

I guess if I didn't already own a 07 SGT, I would be in the market for a new SGT with the 5.0 engine, suspension and exhaust mods. But, I'm a die-hard Shelby fan, for those who are not... the new Boss 302 would be my choice! Also, I would not sell my 07 to upgrade to a new SGT! Just saying....

NO... with the GT350, GTS, Super Snakes, you don't need it but like someone already mentioned Shelby meaning SAI doing a GT/CS would make sense. Limited run, low cost, and something different

For me it all depends on what is offered and what it looks like. The 07-08 SGT will always be more valuable than a standard Mustang GT but I don't believe it will be by much. How well they are cared for and mileage will dictate value more than anything.

If we are talking a choice of body and stripe colors with the SGT hood scoop, Ford Racing suspension on the Mustang GT track-pack car (Brembos and recaros) I would be very interested.

For me the though decision would be 'Do I want an New SGT or a BOSS?'

That's where I'm at as well. The quality, features and price would have to be in the new Boss 302 range or I would just get a Boss. I wouldn't drop $40K for a new Mustang GT and then another $15K (or more) for a new SGT package. It just wouldn't be worth the extra $$$ for me.

All very interesting comments. We do have a product plan but if everyone who owns or did own a Shelby GT remembers, the core of the car was handling. We all know about the issues. I belive they were lessons learned. Here is what I read and hear: If you do it,

  • Has to handle
  • Is pre-post title a real issue (all cars coming through Las Vegas are modified in Las Vegas) CSM/Badging etc. to some it does. Pre-title would be nice though.
  • No fake hood scoops
  • Better quality stripes or stripe delete avalibility
  • Shifter
  • Exhaust
  • Distinctive looks
Add to the list. There could be a case made for a GTS (V-6) GT (V8). Just listening to what our potential market would like to see if it came to life.

07'and 08' Shelby GT = 66' GT350

13'/14' Shelby GT = 69' GT350 fake scoops and all. Give it the same wild scoop treatment that made Carroll mad back then. Even go for the same stripes. Go full circle.

I always wanted a 65/66 Shelby so I got the 08'SGT. Maybe the 69'/70' fans will want a new version of the SGT.( I like them too)

We are coming to an end of Muscle car era #2. Make history repeat itself.

And I need an automatic for this tired old left leg.( I get my four speed fix in my 65')

The Shelby of the future for the youngsters will soon happen with the entry of the new body style in 2015. The vintage rage will pass soon, so lets go out in style. Forget trying to get the twenty somethings to buy this body style. Save that for the 15'. Make the old timers happy.

Thank you, everyone for your responses. Feedback on product or thought process is extremely valuable. Sweet spot seems to be $45K in price point. Handling on par along with HP to current product offerings. Simple build without long lead times is a clear message.

Not a car to built in large quantities. Target would be 150 or less for a two year or less run. HP 450 minimun on NA motor.

Thank you, everyone for your responses. Feedback on product or thought process is extremely valuable. Sweet spot seems to be $45K in price point. Handling on par along with HP to current product offerings. Simple build without long lead times is a clear message.

Bingo. I would be seriously interested, even though I may loose a marriage over it. Just give me 18 months to pay off the SGT.

I realize there is some concern over identity dilution, and that there might have been a couple of missteps in the Terlingua program, but it seems to me much of this discussion points at a similar approach: Two-level (standard/performance) option list, certified local builders, pick your own color/transmission base car, earnest money up front, big dose of patience. And what do you get for your investment?

Shelby Terlingua 5.0.

Judging by the original Shelby Terlingua's history, one of the most desirable of Shelby's offerings.

Shelby doesn't owe me "collector value" on my car. I bought it, I drive it, I enjoy it, it's awesome.
The reason the 60's Shelbys are valuable are because SHELBY AMERICAN EFFECTIVELY DIED in the 70's.

Make a badass ride around $45K that people can buy, that will handle well and look cool, and let more people join the family. SA has every right NOT to repeat the company's 1970s COLLAPSE!

The Shelby GTS has no "ring" to it. The Shelby GT name is valuable. Go forth and build cool cars!
A quantity of 150 ain't gonna "dilute" NUTHIN'.

That is so correct BUT.

Thankfully the 05' retro Mustang is what brought the Shelby Mustang and Shelby Auto back in the spotlight and made us want to get one.. The Ford/Shelby bold moves ramped up production even more than expected. The similarities to 65' to 73' are many.

There will not be a 70's Shelby collapse. But there will be a reinvention when the non retro 2015 Euro Mustang comes out.
I think Shelby performace parts will have a bright future.

Good Luck Shelby marketing, it will be exciting times. You will be fine.

For now, I say cash in on this body style while you can. It could be the best one of the retro era. We are living the good old days right now.

Let's see why would anybody collect a 500 unit "first Shelby Mustang" produced by Shelby for the Hertz corp.since 1966 and First one since 1969 ? Certainly not for all out performance with an auto trans. That's what the Boss is for. What's wrong with taking care of a car you love and passing it on to another generation ? With out the "COLLECTOR " or car buff old Shelby's would have been destroyed a long time ago.You have customized your Shelby to your style . You are right your car will not be a collectable. But so what ,you have enjoyed it in your way, That's cool !

I didn't say anything about the Hertz cars.
As for my "customizing", I have all the original parts and have done no permanent mods. Just to clear that up.
My gripe isn't with people collecting them. It's with folks that don't want Shelby to make any more, so theirs will be worth more. That's not fair or reasonable.

Don’t build another Shelby GT, not yet. And if SA should decide to build one, I would recommend waiting until at least the next Mustang chassis is introduced. What’s the target audience? Where’s the market for another Shelby GT? I’d hate to see Shelby GTs languishing on dealer lots again. A few KRs still are! I would focus my attention on “improving the breed”.

SA has a pretty good spread of Shelby Mustang offerings right now. If $45k is the price point we’re looking at right now, I’d say go after making the Shelby GTS more desirable.

Car / Mustang enthusiasts usually fall into or transition through four broad purposes for their car(s):
1. Daily driver / transportation
2. Weekend enjoyment / car shows / boulevard cruising
3. Drag racing
4. Road racing / autocross

I’ve seen folks use their 2007-2008 SGTs for all of these purposes, even though the emphasis was always about what great handling abilities the car possessed. Currently, the Shelby GTS fits the bill in almost the exact same way, except it can be more customized from “the factory” than the SGT ever could. The only real downside as I see it is that the GTS is a post title Shelby. That’s a big deal to some, while it’s not to others.

Why not make the GTS better by making it a more tailorable purpose built car? Add the Boss 302 Hi-po V8, a “track pack” package and more exhaust system options to the list.

Finally, market it. I thought it was great to read all of the Shelby GTS first drives and road tests when the car first came out. I don’t think I’ve seen anything about it since though. How about some coverage of some shoot-outs or competitions?

Just some food for thought.
