Hi all. I had someone tell me they removed the soundproofing material under their hood of a 2013 GT500 for a "cleaner" look and that the material has nothing to do with protecting the hood paint from engine heat. They said the engine was louder and thats what they liked. Someone else I asked said removing the material would cause too much heat on the hood and would ruin the tape stripes. Whats the truth??

Wow... mixed emotions on this one. Probably some truth to both. I've seen guys customize the underside of the hood, but usually those cars don't see many miles.

I remember reading somewhere that in case of an engine fire the insulation is supposed to drop down and (at least) slow the fire down. Any truth to that?

I read that somewhere too....
My Lightning didn't come with underhood insulation and the paint is still good.

LOTS of people have done it and I've never heard ONE have a problem, with paint or stripes.

I did it for awhile when my STB was pushing up on the hood a tad. It only lowered it by about half so I took the STB back off and put the blanket back on.

I saw one person say it's there in the case of a fire and how it will fall off and 'blanket' the engine to put it out. The real reason it's there is for (EPA) noise reduction.

It may or may not quench a fire. I've been in the towing/vehicle recovery business early in life, pulled MANY a burned up car and not one was helped by a hood blanket! (and ALL started in the engine bay).
