For the first time ever, I'm going to a private track event with my SGT January 12-13th near Savannah, GA. I've been told by several sources that I should look into getting some "Race Wrap" to cover the front of the vehicle to protect it from flying debris. I was looking for some one-time use stuff that I could just peal off and throw away after the weekend was over, not something that was a permanent clear protector.

I've looked on-line, but I keep coming up empty handed. I've even called Summit Racing with no luck from them.

Does anyone know where I can get some thing?

Should I just order an SPP car bra to cover the front end? Will a car bra from SPP cause any issues at high speed on the paint?

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,
Andy.

Road Wrap is a cling wrap type of product. Here's a link: http://www.empirecov...-road-wrap.aspx
I'm sure you can shop it online. This is definately better than the painter's tape.

AWESOME!!!!

That's it! Thank you very much.

I'm looking forward to it - it is a very laid back group, and half of them are driving instructors. I've been told that they will gladly take you on a ride in their vehicle to teach you the basics and let you observe, then ride along with you in your car for your session....same bunch of 20 guys have been doing the same session once a year for last 10 yrs plus....

I'll let you know how it goes!

Andy.

Find an Ace Haedware and pick up a couple rolls of clear Poly Tape.

Also, track down some clear Con-Tact brand contact paper.

These are tricks I picked up from the Corvette guys, I use both and they work.

I've also seen tape like the Blue Painters type but colored, is that around the web?

Definately take the instructors up on their offer. A few sessions with them riding shotgun will help you leapfrog in ability. As the other posters mentioned, you will be hooked; this is what your car was truly made for.

Thank you good sir!! I can hardly wait!!!!!

I'm trying to prep the car as best I can. I'm finishing off the Front Brake Cooling kit this weekend and have the Steeda Panhard Bar and Bar Brace on the way as well to center the rear. I just had new BF Goodrich Comp-2 in 255/45 ZR 18s put on today on stock rims to give me enough time to get them ready. I still had the stock tires with 19,600 miles on them in good shape just hard, old rubber at this point.

I was thinking about doing the SPP Lower Rear Control Arms for about $300, but not sure if that will be a noticable improvement to help out a first timer like me. Any thoughts? Just leave it as is or will that help round out the better Panhard bar & brace?

Thanks,
Andy.

I think your car is good to go as it came from Shelby. We tracked ours several times and it performed well. I cannot compare that with an SGT that has your upgrades, as I have not driven one. These cars came setup pretty well for track days as stock SGTs. The higher HP cars would catch me on the straights, but many times I would beat them through the twisties.
Your tires are definately important; good on getting a new set. Have fun and post up after your track time.

I'll ask here. Does the RaceWrap coexist with clear bra?

How well does it tolerate high wind and water? I used a different material (that I got from Shelby) to wrap my Cobra and like the blue tape it lifted at the last edge at high speeds. The "flutter" caused some wear (like sandpaper!) at that trailing edge. It buffed out but I won't try it again.

Tony

The race wrap held for me. I know what you mean from the blue tape days. Now I am only getting chunks of rubber out of my wheels and tires; the paint is free of issues and it can co-exist with a clear bra. It's really just cling wrap for your car. Some will cover essentially the entire car for a track day; I have not wrapped my roof.

Both sizes of Race Wrap arrived today!!
I finally got the SGT Front Brake Cooling Bezels installed in the front facia, so all I have left to do is run the vent hoses and connect.
The SGT goes into a local mod shop (Injected Engineering) to have the JBA Shorties, Steeda Underdrive Pulley, and Steeda motor mounts installed.
Panhard Bar and Bar Brace installed this past weekend.
New BF Goodrich Comp-2 tires installed last week.

I don't think I could get my SGT any more ready for a fun weekend on Jan 12th & 13th!!!

Oh wait....reload the wallet somehow...I hate that when that happens!

Andy.

Does the road wrap leave scratches? Saw this comment on Amazon:

Have tried this before on a long trip. This stuff results in scratches in the clear coat once it begins to peel off and starts flapping. The application process also introduces scratches in the clear coat since any minute particle will be scraped against the paint when the applicator is used. Unless you wash your car in some kind of dust free room before application, the presence of any particles is inevitable. I'd recommend just making sure you have a decent coat of wax on your car before trips and to stay away from this stuff at all costs.

Be careful with RoadWrap! I let this stuff stay on too long, 4 days, and it left a NASTY sticky residue on my car that was a PITA to remove.
I'd never use it again to be honest.
Hopefully your experience will be different!

What is the product name on the package? I couldn't find 'Track Wrap' on the 3m site.

It was made by 3M for an open track organizer...the product name of the package was Track Wrap w/ a picture of a Saleen on it. I also attempted to Google search but was unsuccessful.

Thanks for the advise Jeff.

I'll make sure I remove it promptly. Since this is a two day event, depending on how much of a pain it is to install, I may change it out after the first day so that I'll have a fresh layer on for the second day and the trip home as well.

Hey Andy,

Let me know how it works out for you.

I wanted it to work but afraid to deal with it again. I've been using painter's tape since which is also a PITA.

Thanks!

Hey Jeff -

THE RACE WRAP WAS A BIG SUCCESS FOR ME.

I was very glad I bought both a 6" roll and an 18" roll...probably should have ordered an extra 6" roll. It was so popular, that a couple of others asked to borrow some. It was very misty and foggy the first day (Saturday 7:30 am) at the track, so the car was actually wet. I took several (about 10) car towels with me and wiped down all the areas I wanted the protection. I started placing the wrap on covering the entire nose up to a line even with the peak of the wheel wells across the hood (about 1/2 to 2/3s towards the scoop), then behind the front tires, in front of the rear tires, and then behind the rear tires. Obviously, I did leave the upper and lower grill areas uncovered and my Front Brake Cooling Duct openings.

I didn't do the best job getting the bubble and runs out of it, but I was more concerned with protection than looks...I'll see if I can post of a few pictures. It looks crazy and may have gotten a few laughs about being obsessive, but even one attendee emailed me tonight to say he was glad to see that I did a good job protecting my SGT.

A few times I would have to replace the spots that would let go after a session because the adhesive is very, very light. It sticks better to the clean paint than it did to itself...the larger the piece, the better it held. Also, I figured out that when I extended INTO the wheel well and wrapped underneath, it didnt do as good as when I would cut right at the crease where the fender fold under. The kit even included a modified paper cutter to use to trip the wrap. When I covered the hood, I was able to extend from fender to center stripe and then same on the other side, then take the "paper cutter" and easily slide it down the cracks where the hood meets to cut so I could easily open the hood to vent. I then took another piece and extended along the whole front and wrapped underneath along the entire hood. These three pieces never even budged. And it never shed any pieces (small or large) while driving so the other drivers were not bothered with flying pieces off the Saran Wrap car, as I called it.

I did have someone help me for about 15 minutes and working together we covered almost the entire car where I wanted. That was the great part about this weekend...anytime anyone needed to do something, there was never lack of help from one, two, or three other drivers nearby. From rotating or completely changing tires (which sometimes happened several times) to changing out front brake pads, there was more than enough help and plenty of tools and race floor jacks to get the job done. Several times a saw a couple of cars completely off the ground with no wheels getting worked on by 2 or more drivers to one car....excellent group of guys (hope I get an invite back again next year).

At 2:30 pm on Sunday, it was time to leave Savannah area and head back 250 miles to Atlanta. I was afraid to leave it on too long based on some of the comments here, so I gently pulled it all off in about 3 to 5 minutes and threw it away. Once I was done, several folks came around and said that I was very smart to do that to such a beautiful car. A quick once over showed no markings even from some of the pieces that were gently flapping in the wind....probably because I wisely put a good coat of Meguires synthetic wax on it Thursday night before the trip. Other than my tires being worn and very dusty front rims, you could never tell that I was even at the track.

If you are thinking about doing a track event, then I'd do ther race wrap. I think it was $50 well spent. I don't recall if many things hit my car up front, but it was just piece of mind to know that I didn't have to worry. The many chunks of rubber that stuck to my tires that went flying off as I slowly drove away from the track each day didn't bother me either...it did sound like a 4 wheel drive truck coming out of the mud each time for about the first 2 miles.

Hope that helps with a full review...

Andy.

See Post #1.....

Here is a copy....

Road Wrap is a cling wrap type of product. Here's a link: http://www.empirecov...-road-wrap.aspx
I'm sure you can shop it online. This is definately better than the painter's tape.
Enjoy your track time!

I have a spare roll for sale...bought two about a year ago and only do 1 - 2 events a year. I believe it's 20' or 25' roll and it's 30" wide...and 5 mil...very heavy duty selft adhesive..works great. PM me if interested.
