Hello Team Shelby,

I have been in search of a factory navigation system for my 2008 Shelby GT500, and having a difficult time locating one. As such, I wanted to ask if it's worth the time and energy for the search or not? Should I consider an after market Navigation System? If so, which one?

Best,
Venomus08

If you have a Shaker 1000 in your current car already....the nav system will not work in your car.

It is worth it if you want to maintain originality and factory look, otherwise there are some nice aftermarket options like Pioneer. I like original Ford and would locate a factory unit, make sure it will work with your application.

There are usually Ford Nav radios on ebay all the time for reasonable prices. You can also pick one up at your local Ford dealer but it will not be cheap.

If you like the OEM look the factory Nav is the way to go. If you want all the latest bells & whistles, then aftermarket is the only way to go.

If your Shelby originally came with a Shaker 1000 system the Nav radio will work just fine but you'll lose the Shaker 1000 sub-woofer in the trunk. The Shaker 1000 sub-woofer can be unplugged and either left in the trunk or removed for some extra trunk space.

Thanks to all... fortunately for me I don't have the Shaker 1000 and as I would like to maintain most of the car's original components, I would like to locate the factory Nav System for this car. I'll try eBay, but was told to stay clear of there because of potential knock-offs claiming original (OEM). I'm trying to avoid going directly to the Ford dealer because it will cost a lot higher getting it from them.

If any one has any leads, please pass along. Thanks!

My 08 gt500 has the factory Nav and it don't even have a set up for bluetooth. I have a JVC nav. in my 2004 4-runner an it has hands free bluetooth and a SD card slot. When I trade my 4-runner in I plan to put it in my gt500.It will fit right up. Ed

Thanks Edgoods and Cali_KR! Maybe I should seek an after market navigation system. I definitely like the option for Bluetooth, especially today with our smartphones. I thought that it would be standard in factory units, I guess not.

Edgoods recommended the JVC nav system...Thanks! Any other recommendations?

WARNING! I did a BUTT LOAD of research on this and no matter what anyone tells you it's hit-or-miss and black magic getting the OEM head unit to work post-production. Be careful what you buy off ebay. There are units that will only work in specific models, there are units that are "promised" to be flashed, there are units that when installed have errors you need to clear every time, there are some that owners found they simply couldn't get to work. In all honesty and IN MY OPINION I wouldn't bother. I would go with any humber of the better 3rd party options that are supported and actually meant to work out of the box.

Good luck either way!

Thanks Jeff! I heard that too and is why I posted this to ensure I don't fall into any regrets in my purchase/upgrade for a good Nav System. :) Looks like the aftermarket unit is the way to go.

Any recommendations for which unit/brand to look into?

I know more than a few members have done it as well as MANY more on the different Mustang sites. Here try doing a search for "Nav" or "navigation" and see what you come up with. Do the same on the other sites. There have been some I've seen that are REALLY nice and look OEM but I can't put my finger on them right now.

Hopefully someone that's done this will see and provide some examples.

BTW: An added benefit of many of the 3rd party units and that they have WAY more features and better UI than the stock unit. Also be sure to consider the cost of any map upgrades. The stock DVD was over $100 so I was always a year behind buying the previous version on ebay for $25 or so. Something to keep in mind as total cost of ownership.

Be sure to come back and post what you find and the outcome!

You simply cannot swap out the OEM head unit (HU)- Shaker 500, 1000, or Nav., with another "mustang" HU without sync'ing and/or replacing the module, which is located in the driver's side foot-well. Sure, it may work, but I doubt that all of the features will be operational.

Personal experience: I had a ‘08 GT500 w/the Shaker 1000. The CD changer did not work. The dealer replaced the HU under warranty. The CD player worked, but now the satellite radio did not… After several visits back to the dealership it was determine that the OEM module was not compatible with the new head unit. They replaced the module to match the HD and all is/was well…

While I also prefer the OEM HU to others- if this is something that you really want to do, then save yourself a lot of headaches and go aftermarket… GL.

I would not recommend the stock '08 Nav unit. It is alarmingly unremarkeable. With just using the stereo feature the screen is mostly different shades of gray, which makes it very unappealing. I was very disappointed in it.

Steve, if you have to unplug the subs or take them out, then to be correct, it will not work with the factory Nav... Also, if you are looking for a better sound quality with the upgrade, then aftermarket is the only way to go. Thought I was going to have to change out all the speakers in my shaker 1000, as they sound blown, but when I upgraded to a Pioneer with a seperate subwoofer control for the subs, it made all the difference!! It would be nice if someone from Ford or even Shelby would speak with Pioneer, since they make the factory radios for Ford to get on the same page, but even the pulgs and wiring is different from one another...

I use my Facorty Nav on a regular basis and I am pretty happy with it. Before a 3200 mile Hot Rod Power Tour run in 2012 we programed in all the hotels and show locations. Really helps to have it all ready to go.

Aftermarket all the way. Keep your stock HU on a shelf where it belongs.

Kenwood or Pioneer are the brands I'd look at.
2005 Turn2 CS6 Vert, Sonic Blue, First Officially Licensed CS6 Leather Interior Upgrade Kit, Black Top, IUP, Shaker 500 - believed to be 1 of 1 with this combination. All the usual Turn2 CS6 goodies plus, shaftmasters aluminum driveshaft, JBA ceramic coated headers, antenna delete, CDC sequential tailights, Agent 47 door mirrors, autographed airbag cover, Kenwood DDX6019 double DIN DVD head unit with Nav & Sirius, Infinity Reference 6832cf's Front & Rear, Shelby Kicker Subs and a few dress up pieces. 370hp, 377ft/lb torque.
2013 Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio, Bianco, Black roof, fully loaded. 160hp, 170ft/lb torque.
Spending money I don't have on parts I don't need to impress people I don't know :)Steve

like i said before,I like my JVC, but go with what brand you like. I would recomend the SD card because you can load it with alot of music, pop off the faceplate, insert the card, put the plate back on and forget it. The usb stick is unsightly. Ed

I have the factory Nav unit in my 08 SGT. It was the same unit I had at the time in my 2007 Explorer Limited, so I enjoyed the similar controls. At this point, I agree with what Jeff and the others have said, you are much better off with a better featured and more reliable installed unit to go aftermarket, and just save your original Shakker 500 unit for posterity.

Good luck and let us know what unit you decide to go with...

Andy.

I know this is an old thread, however I just purchased a 2007 Shelby GT and I am assessing the non factory parts on the vehicle.  The radio was stolen out of it on the lot and the dealer replaced the missing touch screen head unit with a Shaker.  Can anyone tell me (as Google is failing me) on the factory unit on the Shelby GT?  I have this link form eBay, and I see the warnings on the units out on eBay as well as the likely hood of changing out the module to make the unit work.  I assume that I have only one option to worry with on the head unit in the Shelby GT?

http://www.ebay.com/...1a520bf&vxp=mtr

I assume that this is it and that I all that I need, but what I have run into, as I am sure you all have too, is the other options that are on the unit.  I am still getting to know my car (literally bought it Saturday night at 11:30) and just researching more so than anything else.  This car is a garage queen, so I am looking to put it back the way it rolled off the factory line in 2007.

I could be wrong, but I didn't think NAV was available on am '07. I thought it didn't become an option until '08

The unit you are looking at is not a factory Ford radio. Still might be a nice unit and has lots of options but its not something that Ford ever installed, must be an aftermarket model...

Here is a picture from E Bay that is similar to my 2008 Ford unit.http://www.ebay.com/...18f2256&vxp=mtr

Shelby GT's could have come with three different factory radios, the Shaker500, the Shaker1000 and the most expensive Shaker500 w/Navigation.

If you would let me know your CSM number I'll be glad to check into what radio your SGT had when new.

Steve
