Apparently Ford has decided to abandon its high level drag racing support and really make a lot of people unhappy...

I know, I know, I said #16 before, but that's what they told me. Now it's 13. Is it too late to send it back?

IMO, Ford left drag racing long ago when they kicked Bob Glidden and the real Ford race car to the curb in favor of appling more funds to Force and funny's

However, one may also not look at it as why Ford is leaving NHRA top ranks, but why is NHRA losing Ford?  What is happening with NHRA causing enough descension causing a key manufacturer to pull out?

Well, they've been trying to get that back, but Larry Morgan's had very little luck getting a consistent program going. CERTAINLY nothing like the legend Glidden!

BTW, I was fortunate enough to see Bob drive Cunningham's Ford P/S a few years ago. What a thrill watching him stage the car, seeing "Bob Glidden" on the window. Suddenly I was a little kid again!

It sounds like Ford is repeating the 70's. Whats next, Nascar? I am starting to not like Fords decisions lately! I am not to enthusiastic about the new 2015 Mustang, nor them taking over the GT350 and dropping the GT500. Now they're screwing with the racing sports! I am losing my faith towards Ford.

Meh...none of the stuff is real Ford anyway.....oops, I stand corrected...the article states:

"Ford did point out Friday it was not leaving drag racing altogether but would focus its efforts on supporting the Cobra Jet program firmly entrenched in sportsman competition."

Actually, The Ford Racing "Boss 500" engine program with Tasca and the Force teams had a ton of FoMoCo involvement, as did The Medlen Project for safety system development. Don't remember if Wilkerson was still using that stuff.

From SEMA 2007:

Ford and Force Racing unveiled the first new entry into the nitro burning hemi engine field in modern times. The crew developed the engine using space age analytical tools, beefing up the main bearing journals and surrounding webbing to help keep the crank and pistons from windowing the blue anodized block. Force Mustang Funny Car driver Mike Neff will be the first to huff the good stuff through the blower, with Robert Hight and Ashley Force phasing in the mill in their own Mustangs after nitro scientists John Medlin and Austin Coil fine tune the 8000 horsepower nitro burner.

Oh, no doubt there was tons of involvement, however I don't believe that the engine was actually a Ford, per se.  I always interpreted this to say that they further developed an existing Hemi as opposed to designing and building a Ford funny car engine from the ground up.

Pretty sure a ground up new Ford design for top fuel wouldn't meet with current NHRA regs.

If that is indeed the case, then you can't knock them for working within existing restraints.

To me the real shame though, would be if there were no longer any Mustangs in Pro Stock.

They make for a sharp looking car and that class is by far my favorite pro class.

Its just not the same if it doesn't have doors on it.

I am not resisting change, I just don't like it.

Denstang65,

It's not just you.  Very few people like or appreciate change. It is apparently human nature. I don't like change anymore than the next guy but I have learned to accept it without fear because as I said, it will just happen without me.

FWIW, I used to teach Auto Tech and I'd put some motivational verse on my whiteboard every day before class. That was one of my favorites and generally came on a day when I'd be lecturing on a advancement in technology (for instance, going from carburetors to FI, point ign. to elec. ign, etc.)

I've seen resistance to change occur when automobile mfgr.'s changed from generators to alternators. Those "new fangled alternators and their internal diodes (semi conductors/ELECTRONICS!) were the work of the devil"!  Then again when they started changeing from drum brakes to disc brakes. Then again when they went from conventional point ignition to electronic ignition.  Then from carbs to EFI.  Then from manual brakes to ABS. Then....Well, you get the point (Drive By Wire (DBW) is the latest I recall).

Like most change, once people learn the technology, they readily accept it.  Fear (of the new technology) breeds contempt!  Learn it and you end up loving it. I HATED fuel injection....Before I started taking classes and learned it. Now I'll take FI over a carburetor ANY day (take a hint NASCAR fans!).

Time heals all wounds,

Phill Pollard

Use to teach? Sounds like you still have the magic touch. I totally respect what you have said and would have to agree. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction and helping me desided to not be so pessimistic. I am sure your former students were very fortunate to have had you as a teacher. Thank you for teaching me. I will keep the faith. Oh, and to somewhat eat my own words, I, too, agree about EFI. l would love to  put EFI in my 65, using the carbureted look so I can still keep it looking old school with the ol' Hipo Air Cleaner.

I thought Ford was pulling away from the "Big Guys" and putting more Money towards the Smaller Guys.  It is cheaper for Ford to do that, that is why you are seeing more Reality Shows on TV, because they don't have to pay them as much as they do for Shows like "Two and a Half Men".  They can take the same amount of Money that they give to John Force and give it to 100 serious Mustang Racers, getting their Name on 100 Cars instead of 1 should be a LOT better.

On a related note, this past weekend at Indy I saw some GREAT racing by the Grand-Am series cars.  These cars do have doors and Ford involvement, and I really enjoy watching the Mustangs, Camaros, BMW's and Aston's compete in the GS class.  I think if not for a late race caution a Roush Mustang would have won that event.

This is what Mazda has been doing for years, with great success.
