I got the dreaded Safety Recall Notice today in the mail.

It's the air bag inflator recall. It sounds like the same issue we've been hearing about for the past year involving millions of cars.

In the event of a crash an inflator rupture could result in metal fragments causing injury or death...

Now have to wait for FMC to let me know when the parts are available so I can get repairs done.

Are all SGT owners receiving this notice?

I have a 2008.

Tony, think we're just going to have to face the fact that there shall be at least 50 different threads on this same topic, over, and over, and over again.

First time ever getting a notice about my airbag or seeing any threads on it...but ok.  I must've been on vacation or didn't pay it no mind because it didn't pertain to me.  Anyway for those of

us who were in the closet...are you going to let Ford touch your car?  A quick survey at a car show I attended was an resounding " NO".  I'm on the fence.

I couldn't let this post slide without a response.........

You've got to be joking right? Who the hell else are you going have to 'service' your Mustang?? Do you think you can walk up to the parts counter and pickup the new air bag and do it yourself or have Billy Bob at the local garage satisfy the requirements of the recall???

This is a FORD factory recall where a dealership is required to perform the work..... The question is why wouldn't you want FORD on the hook for the replacement, especially when it comes to a safety device such as an air bag. I guess you could always not have it done.

I wouldn't want to be number nine......

"Airbags made by the Japanese manufacturer were found to explode and send shrapnel into the face and body, mainly in the event of an accident. So far, authorities have linked the airbags to seven deaths in the U.S. and one in Malaysia."

Sorry for not making my question clear.  Would you prefer to have your airbag replaced or not have anyone touch your car at all?

And yes, I would love for my local body shop to do the replacement if possible...for one they do it all the time and two I personally would stand a better chance of having my car properly cared for, which is what we want anyway.

No one but Ford can clear the recall status on OASIS.   I know at least one respected shop that will not touch it due to liability issues down the road (i.e., should the vehicle get in a wreck after a third party replaced the canister, and the air bag deploys (whether there is an issue or not) guess who is gonna get sued?)

Stay within the process.

There are legal and liability issues for Ford that outweigh your preference for who performs the work which are outside your or Ford's control.

In addition should your passenger be killed or injured due to a later malfunction of the Air Bag that you decided not install, or have installed by your trusted service guy, you can be sure the estate will come looking for you and your assets and don't think for a minute your insurance company us going to step-up.

As for the issue of threads, while not required, it's a considerate rule of thumb to search first and ask questions later.

Good luck.

get Ford to do it. If you don't like your local Ford dealer, then go to another one. Ford touches my Shelby anyway when i get routine service. oil and filter change, rotate tires, new set of tires, had shocks replaced with Bilstiens. nobody BUT Ford has touched it other than i had a muffler hanger break off and had a quick fix at a different shop that I knew had good reputation anyway. But, do as you wish. I wont ride in your car with you. lol

I had mine done last month. Normally no issues with this dealership. For this recall though the service tech put a nick in the silver steer wheel trim piece. Not sure how he managed that.  I called service manager over and showed him and they ordered a new part and replaced it.  I get what nojoke4true is saying about not wanting some rube to F_up your car, but since it's a Ford factory recall you have to have them do the work. Good luck.

Thank you... that was all I was trying to say before the safety police got all technical.

Noone is disputing that the dealer can (and some do) screw things up, but the technical point you seem to have missed is quoted above.

Your best defense is to request to be present when the work is done, or carefully document the condition around the service area before they do the service.

My dealer says I will be present when the work is done and allowed to drive the car to the service bay.

Cheers,
Tony

The second recall (July 2015) will be a LONG time...   Anyone getting the recall done now is getting the first (Dec 2014, technically second) recall done.

No point missed.  It's only relevant for those who choose to have the recall done...not everyone will have the recall done :airquote: .  Botton line is we are all on the same team in here ( we love our cars) so any information pertaining to our cars should be appreciated.  Thanks for sharing guys.

I don't know why anyone would choose not to have it done!!! Should someone be more scared of getting a scratch on their car or of getting killed or injured. Not much of a choice in my opinion.

I would check with another dealer my light was not on and was replaced. The recall says nothing about a light having to be on. I would also phone and e-mail FORD and let them know the name of that dealer and what they told you.

Well good thing some of us still have a set and refuse to march to the beat of anothers drum.  Should we park our cars and have them towed to the dealer for the recall?  Those of you who have a wife or children drive your car should have it changed... period.  Like anything else...its just a preference to not have it done. Whoever inherits or buys my car can worry about it then.  I grew up driving a 66 Plymouth Valiant rust bucket with manual everything...so I don't scare easily.  Enjoy people.

I finally received the notice for the airbag recall a few weeks ago and have had them replace the driver's side airbag. The Ford guy said that's the only one they are replacing right now, and with millions of airbag recalls going out I'm not too surprised on how long it has taken. I had to wait until I got a yellow recall card, no needing the airbag light to go on.

What did surprise me is that they not only didn't have my Shelby's air filter (and refused to clean the stock one), didn't have the proper tools to grease the suspension, didn't have replacement trunk struts (liftgate support), but they didn't even have any BF Goodrich tires. Told me to come back in March for those! I doubt they'll have the passenger side airbag ready by then.

You have a car almost ten years old. Most dealerships aren't going to stock parts for any car that is that old except for very common items like maybe oil filters, spark plugs, and fuel filters that are common across multiple vehicles. It shouldn't take until March to get your parts or tires though.

Just curious how long did it take them? I'm going to get mine done this year, I've had the notice for years it seems. Every year I get my yearly maintenance they say they would have to order parts so I wait until the next time. I think I'll give them a heads up this time.

Got the recall done on my SGT yesterday.

Driver's side or passenger side?

Driver's side takes less time than passenger.

Good to know I'm going to get it done this year.

Might finally do the interior upgrade and paint the stripes too.
