I spoke to Dustin earlier today. He said that the new 2.9L rotors are being cut in 3 weeks. After that we should see a few test pieces available which we'll get our hands on to test and tune on the LethalGT500. As always Justin@VMP will be doing the tuning so we'll keep everyone in the loop.
Just to give everyone something to chew on for the time being here's a little more exclusive info straight from Whipple only seen by your friends at Lethal Performance.. Lethal/Whipple for 2008!!! Woot! I was shocked when I received some Exclusive new spy photos today from Dustin about the new blower he's been working on. Yes a 4.5L compressor!! Although it's still quite a ways out it's going to come to reality. This new 4.5L compressor will be offered in 2 versions. One which will be able to run continuous 30psi and another which is capable of 50psi. I know for many the 2.3L is a lot and the 3.4L is simply more than what most will actually push to it's limit. This all new 4.5L blower will be strictly for the insane racers who have lost their minds. :salut: Please don't call for pricing or a release date as there is none of that information available yet. This is just a taste of what the Lethal and Whipple crew have for the future of modular performance! Jared Here's a few EXCLUSIVE shots of the new 4.5L compressor next to the 3.4L. It's still pretty hard to see the overall size difference from these pictures but I'll point out the noticeable difference in length of the 4.5L rotors to the 3.4L's (IMG:http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/4608/45l3dy9.jpg) (IMG:http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/8256/45l2vh4.jpg) (IMG:http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5884/45l1ws9.jpg) Jared This post has been edited by jared@lethal: May 17 2008, 02:35 PM |

Cool....I thought the 3.4 was big but damn 4.5! Is it possible to be effecient when the blower is almost displacing as much as the motor? Also will this fit gt500? Might have to cut out the firewall to get a large enough intake in the back!
Thanks for the update Jared (even doing this on your vacation...nice!) |

So it looks like close to 3-4 months before kits are available? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/titanic.gif)

That 4.5 was what I could have used for my Hemi's back in the day! Oh well then I probably wouldn't have ended up with my GT500's.....it's all good! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Way back in the days of Garlits and Keith Black engines, don't I remember that the blowers on the fuel dragsters were designated as "6-71" and I thought I remembered that they were modified from trucks with 6 cylinders, each displacing 71 cubic inches. If so, were those on the order of 6.8L blowers. Just trying to compare new terms with old. Thanks.

I believe you are correct. Fuel dragsters and FCs today use derivatives of the 8-71 design, I believe. They are traditional low-twist roots designs and not especially efficient -- not a big deal when the engine is disassembled and well cooled-down between every round.
S/Cs like the TVS 2.3 and revised Whipple 2.9 are very efficient both mechanically and thermally. On a dragster making 8K HP it ok to 'waste' a couple thousand HP <lol> to make huge HP for 5 seconds. By contrast these new gen-2 and gen-3 designs (Whip. twin-screw and the TVS twin-vortex roots) are pretty amazing. I've seen pulls with the TVS 2.3 on GT500 producing 665HP at the wheels at only 14.6# boost with a *very* conservative tune (timing backed-off about 4*) with back-to-back pulls showing IATs of 114*F. Now *that's* efficient ...and still leaves a lot more for the asking. Maybe if you were building a fully built 5.4 racer looking for 1200+rwHP a huge S/C might be worthwhile (dunno) but I've heard the bearings on the 5.4 are 'only' good to about 1,200crank -- modular bearings being necessarily somewhat narrow due to the realtively small bore spacing constraints. Imo, makes sense to pick an S/C as efficient as possible (mechanically and thermally) that's also consistent with your goals (use and HP) and then stuff the biggest (thermally) intecooler heat exchanger you can find (e.g. Afco, Steeda...) to try to make sure the tune never has to pull timing due to high IATs. Just some thoughts... -Dan <edit:> sp. This post has been edited by 68fastback: May 19 2008, 08:21 PM |

I think that the 4.5 would easily feed a stock displacement Hemi for the street. It's not even a 100 cubes bigger than our 5.4's. I would not have had to build the huge cubic inch 604,612,622 size Hemis for streetable power. The supercharged 426 would have been more drivable, better mileage, and easy to convert to fuel injection. I actually contacted Whipple about 5 or 6 years ago for just that thing. The only thing they had for the Hemi's was a wild looking dual supercharger setup for boats 1200 to 1400 hp if I remember right. I just didn't think it would look all "that" cool sticking out of the hood of my Hemi Cuda vert or any of the others I had.I wouldn't have been able to drive in the rain!

Jared,
Are you going to be taking deposits or anything of the sort to get one as soon as they are out? I'm itching to pull the trigger on a Whipple for the 03 or Shelby, I'd rather have it be the Shelby first.. but the wait is hurting (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I called Whipple last week and left a message.....still haven't got a call back. I hope that's not what there customer service is like. Don't hold your breath. I called them twice last month and they never returned my calls. TVS is looking better all the time. |
