I have wanted to center the letters on my rear deck for some time but did not want to go to the hassle of all the measurements to do the work. I got tired of waiting for someone to make a template so I made my own.

There are two sets of measurements floating around. Which one you decide to use is a matter of personal taste. One for the KR and the one that Grabber has posted. Both measurements can be found in this thread

http://www.teamshelb...trunk+lettering

I really studied each in detail to determine which one I want to use for my car and actually made a template for each when doing my comparison. Here are a few observations.

  • Grabber measurements rely on the the stripes to set the final position. Those without stripes would have problems using these measurements.
  • Most of the letters are different widths and as a result even exact placement can make the letters look improperly placed because the spacing between the letters will vary. This is a very subtle point and most people will probably not notice but I started to recognize it the more I looked at it. The KR measurements are more consistent in placement of the letters.
  • KR letters are closer together than Grabbers, once again this is a matter of personal preference.

Personally I chose to use the KR measurements, primarily because the are not spaced as far apart and the spacing between the letters is more consistent.

MY TEMPLATE

Here is a pic of the template. It is cut out of vinyl with holes in the spots for the letters to be installed. I plan to apply the vinyl first, then remove the backing from each letter, install it in the correct hole in the vinyl, then remove the vinyl!

Here is a closer picture of the center of the template. A centering mark as been provided for positioning. All you have to do is center that mark under the center of the brake light in the rear deck lid. To ensure proper verticle position my final template will be cut out of vinyl in the exact dimensions of the surface area where the letters will be applied. Just line the bottom of the vinyl up with the bottom of the deck lid.

I hope to try this out later today. I will take more pics of the install and post them up.

I finished this project some time ago but am just now posting the outcome. My apologies or the delay. First I pulled the old letters off. One of the reasons for the delay was that I was impatient when I pulled them off and scratched my paint a bit, so I took it to my favorite detailer and had him buff them out. Then it was on to the install...

I used a new set of letters for the install.

STEP 1 - PLACE THE TEMPLATE

Since this is vinyl with adhesive on the back I wet the back of the deck lid with auto detailer and then lay the vinyl in place.

STEP 2 - VERIFY PLACEMENT

First I verified that the template was centered by lining up the center of the template (see mark on template) with the center of the brake light on the deck lid.

Then I measured across all the letters to ensure they were all the same distance from the spoiler.

STEP 3 - INSTALL LETTERS IN TEMPLATE LOCATIONS

I pulled the backing off the letters and installed them in the correct location based on the template

STEP 4 - REMOVE TEMPLATE

Remove the template!

STEP 5 - CLEAN UP
Final step is the cleanup using detail spray and you are done!

It doesn't get much easier than that!

That's how it ought to look IMO. Nice work on the template!

Hello there,
Sorry to interrupt your thread, but I was wondering where can I buy the same letters you have mounted on your deck lid  ?
I would like to mount them on my 67 fastback.

GT500Eleanor - welcome to the forum!! Here is the closest thing that I can find:

These ones are have the closest resemblence:

DM Shelby Emblem (Trunk)

These ones do not appear to have the "grooves" like the current emblems:

Shelby Performance - Trunk Emblem

Anybody else know where there are some?

Great write up!

Do you have any pix from directly behind?

While doing this mod, did you happen to notice that the bottom crease of the trunk lid just beneath the lettering is not 100% level or parrellel to the gound. At least that is what I remember when I did this mod.

thx

Hey John will you sell one of these templates to me? My brother would love to do this to his 07, but isn't so sure on the detailed measuring and this looks like a great alternative.
