Did you just move there?

The only option you have is to remove the headers for the smog test or try and find someone who will pass you for a little extra cash.

Otherwise you will fail smog on visual inspection.

Is the problem that you can't have long tubes or is it the high flow cats that don't clean the exhaust enough?

on an emission control vehicle in cali it is illegal to remove the OEM CATS unless they are proven defective, so there is really no way to legally put longtubes on without cats, legally.

Is it legal to *move* the cats? I.e. cut them off and weld them further back?

And failing that, are shorties legal in CA? I assume that tuned shorties are better than stock headers, even though they are not as good as LTs.

You can use shorties IF they are CARB approved. There are several that are though so you can definitely go that way.

No, you can't touch the cats, move them or otherwise. So far, no one makes C.A.R.B. approved headers; shorties or long tubes. You might be able to get away with paying someone off once, but the smog check system that will be going on-line in the next few months will stop those "payoffs" because the smog technician now has to take and file digital photographs of the top and bottom of your engine compartment with Sacremento.

So to answer your question more directly, you don't have any legal options in California at this time.

So then, why don't you just damage your cats yourself? Then you can legally change them. Just a thought....

There are companies that make CARB approved headers but only shorties.

Edit: I'm not sure if they make them for the GT500 yet... didn't see any available so maybe there aren't any for the GT500.

All the more reason for the big 9.9 to hit Kalifornia. Been there 3 times and you couldn't pay me enough to go back!

That shiny IW OD pulley might be a bit obvious then :-) Guess I'm moving in a few years :-)
