Sorry if this has already been discussed, but here goes, and I did a search in the forum and didn't see any related topics.

I'm sure Jeff will enlighten me if I was wrong. :beatdeadhorse:

Because the SGT with the Faux spare does not have support under the press board trunk liner it will deform (warp) with a heavy object on it, namely golf clubs. The all thread that hold in the Fix-a-flat device has almost poked through the carpet.

Anyway, if has anyone else seen this issue please tell me what you did to fix the problem. My first thought was to take it back to the Dealer and say fix it. Just wanted to see if anyone has seen this as well and have a suggested fix before I go in for the next service.

Thanks,

ShelbyDW

Have the same problem. After taking the SGT on the Mustangs Across America Tour last April, I almost poked through the carpet. Now, whenever I hual ANYTHING with any weight on a trip, I take the board and carpet out. Lesson learned!

Never seen this as a thread but I've had this happen in another car that had the spare out.

I went to Home Depot and had them cut a 1/4 plywood shape that I placed under the carpet and it seemed to work well for as long as I had the car.

Little late now though I guess.

OK, I'll come up with a fix for it. Something that will fit over the fix-a-flat device and seat on the bottom of the spare pan metal. Also will be high enough to rest the bottom of the liner press board. Hmmm maybe a little plastic step stool...? I'll get back to you, and the Ford dealer of course. :)

Seems to me that many of the fox bodied Mustangs and a thin piece of fiberboard underneath the trunk liner which covered the spare tire to prevent this from happening. (My '83 convertible had this fiberboard in the trunk.)

I solved the problem by buying a spare tire and jack from a 2006 Mustang GT. The inflate-a-tire gizmo I store in my closet. :happy feet:

I had to use the BS fix a flat/compressor thing. Since then, I've had the same problem. I can't haul anything in the trunk without the liner caving in.
Time for a real spare or a pile of bricks I guess.

I had the same problem. My fix is using two 4 foot lengths of flat bar stock steel that I purchased at an Ace Hardware. One is 2 inches in width. To this I taped the threaded rod cover (that is supposed to prevent the rod from piercing the pressboard...Ha.Ha) to the center of the stock. Then placed this flat stock over the center of the spare tire opening with the threaded rod cover mating the threaded rod. I used tape so any movement would not break a glued joint. Next I used a 1.5 inch to reinforce the rear plastic lip which is a part of the rear inside trunk panel covering the tail lights. My pressboard was not only punctured by the rod, but continued to push by the plastic lip. The 1.5 inch flat bar is pushed under the plastic lip which increases the area that the pressboard rests upon. To each piece, I placed tape on the sections that met the painted metal trunk floor area to prevent movement. It works great. Maybe I'll paint them, maybe. Hopes this is of help to someone.

+1

I also bought a small Race Ramp to run the flat tire up on to be able to get the jack under the car. Works like a charm!

Perry,

Pictures? I like your idea. My gym bag and brief case are too heavy and cause the plastic tabs to bend and allow the fiber board to bend.

Todd, I'll try and have pix as soon as this rain stops. I've never posted pix, so I hope the learning curve isn't too flat. I regularly carry two tool boxes and haven't had any problems.

Ken,
Rather than bricks, what about a remote cooler for your soon to be installed air to coolant heat exchanger for your supercharger.
Seen it somewhere and fits nicely in the recess where the spare tire would normally be stored.

^I like the sound of it. You have any idea where I'd look?
I wasn't actually gonna put bricks in my trunk, by the way.

Ken,
There was a trunk mounted reservoir tank in article (pg 102) Sept 2009 issue of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords
The charge cooler was by Precision but uncertain as to the source for the tank as didn't see it in their current products.

Hi All,

Quick update on the repair. I had the Ford Dealer look at the problem during the last oil change. They orderd parts and here is the fix.

The first pic shows the new liner which is a dual layer foam filled trunk liner.

The second pic shows the new plastic nut the put on the top of the all thread.

Seems to work fine, even with a heavier load on the liner. So far so good.

PM me if you need any other details.
