Group,

I spoke to the dealer today and he informed me that you shouldn't wax or buff over the satin black stripe on the car. Doing so would ruin the stripe. I thought," how could Ford sell a car you can't wax unless you tape off the stripe?". Can anyone with black lemans stripes on their car post if they have had any issue with them, if so how do you detail the car without ruining the stripes?

You can polish, wax or seal just stay off edges.

I was very hesitant to wax mine but after I did the appearance is a lot better. as mentioned before stay away from the edges, it will stand out like a sore thumb. There were before and after pictures on here somewhere maybe someone could provide a link.

Thanks for the input, sorry to say but I usually let a detail shop take car of my cars. However, I was thinking of taking care of this car myself. Being a novice at detailing, What does stay off the edges mean?

Don't rub wax off the edges of the stripes, more importantly don't rub towards the edge of the stripe while applying the wax. You will see a white line along the edge of the stripe when the wax dries and it magnifies the thickness of the stripe and is difficult to remove. Ask me how I know. I simply apply the wax to approx. 1/8 inch to the edge of the stripe. works well for me. I hope this makes more sense. I am afraid to use a buffer on mine but have read where some do and it doesn't hurt the stripe. I'm sure technique has a lot to do with it. Just be patient even if it takes more than a day, the result is worth it. Good luck.

I wax by hand and wax in overlapping straight lines not circular. I also use Meguairs High Tech Yellow Wax which leaves no white residue. May want to give it a try.

I used the NEW Turtle was "Black Box". Everything in it is black. I didn't wax the stripes but I did use the cleaner and the detail spray on the stripes. It was awesome. I have pictures posted in another thread, can't remember which though. The most important thing is, the skin must be cool to the touch. I have also used Lucas Slick Spray to detail and it was also great for detail work. One more thing, I only use virgin, previously unused, microfiber cleaning materials.

FYI, my regime that keeps a black-on-black 2010 GT500 looking good ALL of the time with not much work. Like the car to look good but am not that dedicated to put constant big time into it. It might not look perfect ALL the time but it is real close.

Got the car in June and it is kept in a garage but it is a near daily driver for now and have run it at the drag strip as well as trailered it (open trailer) to Miami from Virginia to do a standing mile event there. Since June only had to wash it twice and a quick wax once. My plan is to get it detailed once per year by me or a professional, then the rest of the year:

() Use a small California duster on the wheels about every other day. Foam the tires twice a month maybe. The foam that you just spray on and don't have to wipe off.

() Use Armor All external detail wipes after it has dried when it has been in the rain. Also use them whenever needed -- once a week nominally. If it is too grubby for the wipes I use the Turtle Wax Ice spray detailer instead of the wipes. Neither of these have given me any problems with the black strips.

() California Duster the exterior at least five times per week.

() Only plan on doing a full wash a few times a year and after it may get super grubby somehow.

() Use window wipes as needed and leather/etc wipes on the interior.

Don't know about the long term but it has worked so far with very little time invested in the process.

I thought they changed the black stripes to glossy for the '10....

If your stripes are glossy I would just wax them just like the rest of the car.

Most new wax will not leave a white residue. This is the concern for staying off the edge of the stripe. If no residue don't worry about it.

I have blue stripes on my '10 and wax over them just like the rest of the car. Looks great.

The older black striped cars were matte black. These stripes should not be waxed in my opinion.

I put flat black stripes on my 07 and I use Ice on the entire car. It is easy and the stripes look great without worrying about wax showing up along the edges. Since it is vinyl I would not buff it though.

Armor All used to be a silicon based product, and would cause UV cracking on vinyl dashes. Are the stripes vinyl??

formerly known as bobstripower

Just checked the package. Could not find any reference to silicon. Does say it contains Carnauba wax and "propylene glycol n-butyl ether" (whatever that is).

It also says "Note: Not for personal cleansing" -- glad they pointed that out, would have never guessed...
