Picked up my new Shelby this morning, and left on a trip. Drove about 130 miles and fuel guage shows 1/2 tank and compiter shows 160 miles to empty. Then the gas gauge drops to zero computer say 6 miles to empty. I stopped in the next town to fill it up. I can only get three gallons till gas is running out on the ground. Crank it back up shows 3/4 tank and 219 miles to empty, hit the road again. It gets down to 160 miles to empty again drops to 6 miles to empty and fuel light comes on gauge shows no fuel. Since it only took 3 gallons before I think the gauge is messed up, I keep going. 10 miles later I am sitting on the side of I-10 out of gas. Road service brings me 5 gallons. Pour it in gauge shows 3/4 full 219 miles to empty. I was only 20 miles from my destination so I drove on in, tomorrow I will go to the satation and see how much fuel i can get in it. I am not too impressed with the no gas cap deal, try to put gas in it from a gas can, pretty hard to do. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

thanks jerry

No probs here, but the fuel remaining calculation is screwed for the first 10 or so fillups. It's optimistic to say the least. It has to get a handle on things.

EDIT: I did have a critical failure in my fuel pump when brand new. Had to be replaced. Turn the ignition on, don't start it. Listen to the prime. Is it abnormally loud? Start it. Turn climate and radio off. Listen towards the rear seat. Any pulsating and hissing sound?

I think it was just out of fuel. When we poured the 5 gallons in it started right up. From what I have read about the problem, the tank is a saddlebag design and only one side is getting fuel. Can anyone confirm this.

There is a pump that pumps fuel from one side to the other. Maybe that is bad?

Yes I read the owners manual last night and found that. Thats the disadvantage with taking it on the road two hours after picking it up.

That makes sense. I wonder if there is a diagram of the fuel tank on the internet.

+1 I also have one in my new 2009 F-150 Platinum. Its under the rear passenger drivers side seat in my truck. My 2010 Shelby has had zero problems with the fuel gauge or refueling.

Had a similar issue with wife's 06 300C Chrysler. It has the saddle bag tank, also. Not sure if your 2010 has that type tank, but don't think so. I'm sure you know this, but you're not supposed to top off the fuel tank in any of the newer cars as it will corrupt the gas fume recirculation sytem built into our cars. That symptom is the inability of the car to take on gas.

I had a similar problem when I picked mine up: The only issue I had was when I picked up the car was that it was showing near empty and then went to fill it up with the gas chit the dealer gave me (the car only had 7km when I picked it up and the dealer said they didn't want to put any additional miles on it by filling it up). The car would only take about 50 L of gas and the fuel gauge was showing it was full. When I got about 200km into my trip home, the gauge was showing it was just under half full. Then all of a sudden the fuel light came on and the fuel gauge showed empty. The dash display was showing 5km to empty. Luckily I was just 5km from small town and I went there to fill up. Problem was that the car would only take about 30L of fuel and the gas gauge was showing full again. Dealer said it was their second Shelby with the issue and they think there is an air build-up and that it should work its way out. Hope that is all it is.

I drove my car the remainder of the summer here and this problem would happen off and on. Sometimes it would suddenly show empty and other times the gauge would work normally. The first time the gauge worked normally was when I had my car on the track and was running it real hard. Winter has come and did not get my car back to the dealership to get it fixed, but hopefully it works itself out for you. Let me know if you end up having to get it fixed by your dealer and what the issue was.

Have you had any fuel system work done to the car lately? The 05+ Mustangs do use a saddle bag type tank. The actual fuel pumps are on the drivers side, then there is a pick-up on the passenger side that sucks fuel from that tank and brings it over to the drivers side, it works off of siphoning when the pumps are pushing fuel tot he engine. Now, there are two fuel level sending units that average out the fuel levels on each side of the tank. It sounds to me like the siphoning portion of the fuel pick-up does not have a good connection at the fuel pump housing, almost causing something like an air leak not letting the pumps pull fuel from the passenger side efficiently. Also sounds like the passenger side fuel level sender isn't working correctly either, giving you a reading of the fuel level just on the drivers side. Could be something to look at, let the dealer take care of it, should be relatively simple.

I got it home by topping the tank off every sixty miles. When I run it down to half tank and it drops to empty I will take it in and have it checked.
