Ok, here's my dilemma. My local dealer friend has had the 08 KR (Silver w/ Blue stripes, HID, Premium Trim, Ambient, Shaker 1000 and car cover) on his showroom floor for almost a year now. I've been waiting to order a 2011 vert but the other day he gave me an offer on the KR that I have to consider.

A little background, back in 95 I ordered a GT Coupe. I let the Salesman talk me out of a vert. I loved my coupe, but from the day I got it I regretted not getting a vert and told myself I would not let that happen again. Thus, planning to order a 2011 vert. The KR is the only coupe I would ever even consider.

On the 2011 am planning the TVS and Bear Extreme brakes. I really want the vert but a legit shot at getting a KR...So I countered his offer and I asked for the TVS and Bear Extreme brakes. Those are part of the KR upgrade package, but is it wrong to have the dealer install them and not Shelby?

My main concerns about getting the KR:
1. I really want a vert, and therefore will only get the KR exactly the way I want it. Part of me feels like I'm disrespecting the KR though.
2. Is moding the KR wrong?
3. I plan to drive it, so not a collector
4. $10k for a KR hood, $4k for the KR splitter....OUCH. I'm afraid I'll be too paranoid while driving and not really enjoy it.
5. Wifey and 2 daughters want a vert...I could get them a BMW vert is a couple of years though.

Last night I went to the Dealership and sat in the KR and a 2010 he has. I like the 10/11 interior better...but the 08 is a KR.

In writing this I've almost talked myself out of the KR. Of course, none of this means squat if he does not accept my offer. We meet Tuesday, Nov 10 to discuss further.

I am soooo torn. What say you TS?

Hello Henry!

Henry, you've answered your own question, which is quite obvious by your post. You need to get the convertible, it's obviously what YOU want. And personally, we all know that the convertibles will maintain the best value in the future, just look at 99% of the collector cars made in both body styles. Only you can make the decision, don't let a smooth talking salesman, either here or at the dealership, talk you out of what you really want!!!!!! Go drop-top and you won't ever look back again. By the way, I've owned approximately 12 Mustangs since 1971, about half were convertibles. I can definitely say the convertibles gave me the most pleasure. (I've owned the 1983 GT pictured since new.)

I've been toying with getting a KR myself, in fact I just got back from looking at it again. The expense of the hood, splitter and wheels would make me nervous driving it also and I would want to remove them to save. So, I figure it would be easier just to get a GT500 and mod it instead for cheaper money and not have to baby it. As far as my current 'vert goes, I don't really care for them. The upkeep and weaker body with it's creaks and rattles as it ages make me prefer hardtops. A nice sunny day though sometimes makes up for it.

For me it wouldbe the KR. But for you the Vert is the way to go. I would drive the KR, maybe put a bit more HP in it but not much more.

Buy the 'vert;I drive droptops and love them;the '11 will have all the KR horsepower the better interior;and a top that goes down!
got a '09 convert of which about 500 were made, less than the KRs and wind in my greying hair!
LIVE TODAY,these cars ARE NOT investments;they are tin and tires, buy it enjoy it drive it.
Drove my 500 back to LA from SEMA and while getting gas had some idiot ask why it wasn't on a trailer,I buy them to drive, get a '11 and take your wife and daughter out and make some memories...... you'll never regret it.

I'm not really a vert person, but from reading your post, I think you really want a vert... Go for the vert!

Based on your post, you should definitely go with the vert. I own a coupe and vert and I definitely get more enjoyment out of the vert. You absolutely can't beat it on a nice day. My vert is a GT, so there are no special parts on it like my GT-H to worry about. Between the parts and the top, the GT-H coupe spends a lot more time in the garage. IMO, if you are going to drive it, buy the vert. The only exception would be if you want to take it to the track for high performance driving days. You at least need a roof! To do anything in a vert, they require a four point roll bar.

Amen!!!! I personally Know two people who only drive their cars maybe down the street 200yards max or only on the ramp to trailer them and the rest of the miles are accumulated on the dyno where thousands are spent to only stay in the garage... I say go with the vert, mod the :censored: out of it and enjoy it- as Doc put it, LIVE TODAY!!!!

If the vert is a GT500, get it. If you're looking at a '11 MGT vert, get the KR and never look back. (I assume you meant a 2011 GT500...)

Thanks for the input!!

This past weekend was unusually warm here. Was out driving around, saw a lot of ragtops out and thought..."man, it would be awesome to put the top down". I took that as a sign.

I'll be ordering a 2011 GT500 vert. Kona Blue with white stripes.
