I was sniffin' around under my car this weekend, making sure all was up to snuff and I noticed the axle cover. Now I know that rust is an issue on these axles, and there is a fair share of rust on mine but not the worst that I have seen through others pics, but I have not seen this. With the nice SoCal weather, this car sees rain but not much, so mainly the unpainted cast pieces are rusty, hardly any on the axle tubes. Well this is what I saw:

Rust is one thing, but this looks to me like the gear oil has been cooked. When I wiped it off with a rag, the paint (powder)came right off:

Except for that strip in the middle, was that the only part of the cover that was prepped properly?
I did not have enough time to investigate further, I want to check the gear lube to see if its cooked, I kinda doubt that because I think I would have smelled that, my garage, when closed, is sealed fairly tight and when its in there for a while after a drive, I can go back in to the garage and smell most anything funky, coolent leaks, cooked brake, clutch, etc. Yea, I have a bit of a dog nose but I have yet to sense any cooked lube.
Am I just trippin and this is just rust or could this be an indication of something going on inside.

I'm surprised the sticker is still on there. I would think if it got that hot it would have shrivelled up or cracked.

Never seen that before. The cover is painted black and should not corrode. It looks like something got on the cover - don't know what.

Get rid of that nasty cover and replace with one of these:

My cover was rusty with the paint pealing off. I see what you mean though, I can't say it looked exactly like that. It was cleaned and painted when the 3.73 gears were installed.
