When it comes to measuring a/f, I will say this...
When it comes to tailpipe sniffers, if the sensor is old, or the vacuum sniffer box has leaks that introduce ambient air into the stream, there can be errors.
When done right, tailpipe sniffing works, I have dual widebands on my dyno, I can take readings before the cat, and at the tailpipe, and only see a slightly delay and maybe .1 difference. But you don't know if its being done with good equipment.
Jon is an excellent tuner, but we have to do a reality check here. You can't get so caught up in something that you ignore the data right in front of you. Until you rule out that the car is lean by other means, IE calibrating the wideband, or installing the wideband directly into an exhaust bung, YOU SHOULD NOT DISMISS IT.
I can't tell you how Jon does it, but I can tell you I average my tunes over hundreds of cars to come up with what is an extremely close tune. But once again the catch is you can't take into account variations in installations or fuel if you have never seen the car in person before. We now have some degree of ethanol in most of the US, but the catch is it can be anywhere from 0% to 10%, how much are they adding into your fuel? I can tell you the difference between 0% and 10% is .4-.5 a/f on the wideband.
