Son needs car;his old beater fox body coughed its cookies and brother is driving his 96 Cobra after his emblems were stolen.
Any input appreciated;no bashing;can't touch a 06 GT for this price.
Thanks

No bashing, I promise. While the price might be right, let's look at the long term concerns. The car was/is based on the Australian Holden, and GM is rapidly slowing down (stopping) support on the Pontiac brand. My concerns would be mid and long term parts availabilty. Even though the car uses a common, U.S. built GM engine and transmission, which won't be a problem to get parts and service for, I suspect that owners of these cars will sooner or later start having problems obtaining body and trim pieces unless they contact a supplier in Australia directly. And it won't be just the body and trim pieces either. Let's say the heater core goes out on the car, or another component within the HVAC system. It just seems to me that failures on components that are specific to that car will be difficult to support and service as these cars age.
If you are looking at the car to be a two, three, or four year "disposible" car for your son, then you probably won't have any issues, but if you are considering the car to be a long term (five to eight years) DD for him, then I would seriously give these concerns a consideration before signing the dotted line.
Just my opinion of course.

We recently looked at a Pontiac G8. The dealership could not show it to us because the car would not crank due to something or other that had to come from Australia! At the time it was unknown when this special doo-hicky would be in so they could repair the car.
I noticed the other day it's back on the front line. We looked at it months ago.
I would take availability of parts into serious consideration.

I belong to the ls1gto.com forums.
There are a ton of these cars out there and a ton of after market replacement parts.
I don't recall any members having problems with any repairs on these cars.
Most of us either work on them ourselves or have our own mechanics who do.
LS1 and LS2 engines are pretty hardy. That car should last you quite sometime.
Cheers,
John

I believe that Caprice plan has been axed. GM can not meet the new EPA mileage rules coming in a few years so look for major changes to their line-up.
I've heard several stories already of customers waiting on parts to come from Australia. I have no idea what parts but if there is a wait while the cars are new and in the showroom just think about the run around you'll get in another year or so. SonOfGt probably has it correct, long term daily driver equals a headache at some point.

I had a 05 GTO lightly modified and it was a great car. Respectfully fast and didn't handle too bad either. Comfort was better than my GT 500 in some ways. But the GT500 just had a better overall feel to it. Handling wise. If it were not for falling in love with the 500, I would still have it. It's no secret they missed the mark on appearance (and a tremendous opportunity because of that) but for the money it's a 400 HP car under $30K and a lot of fun to drive. As far as parts, there were enough made and are enough getting trashed (almost daily ) that parts will be available for a long time.

Well, Steve, as you know there are four socal members of Team Shelby that are currently also running GTOs. They have been essentially trouble free and great fun to drive. Parts availability has not been as issue for the most part and when parts have been ordered from OZ, they have arrived quickly. Additionally, the G8 will still be sold in the US, albeit as a Chevy badged police vehicle.
Besides, certainly couldn't ever be any worse than trying to keep Shelby Dodges on the road.

Don't get me wrong I'm not putting down the GTO. In fact the last ones sold were a great deal with the discounts.
As SonOfGt mentioned drivetrain parts should be ok. My concern is the unique parts not used on any other North American GM vehicles. People have waited for parts, why and for how long I don't know. Heck I don't even know where the closest Pontiac dealership is (or was) to me.
Up til recently it took nothing more than a trip to the junkyard to keep a Shelby Dodge on the road. Unless you're one of those gluttons for punishment guys playing with 16v motors

The car was ready to come home;papers taken care of;son excited, dad also pumped.
Banker calls and soon to be ex-wife of former owner is blocking the liquidation of assests.
Long story short car is still in repo lot and now attorneys are involved;banker says legal feels it could be a while so back to the search.
Thanks for the input!!

Sorry to hear that it's not working out.
But you could always call in Nic Cage, he can get it for you and he needs the money..... it should only take him like 60 seconds and it will be gone!!!!!

I had friends with GTOs who had no problems, but I got a bad one. Traded the thing in for my 07 Shelby GT and I have had no problems mechanically with 32,000 everyday miles! Got the stripes and hood scoop blues however. Hope this helps, check the build date and stay away from April 06.
