I have several friends who net smelt in Lake Superior. Catch them and fill full size garbage cans with them. Of course it takes a few to have a Meal

Welcome to March garage.  Shouldn't be too long before the cars are out in force.

The ones they catch in the Great Lakes are a smaller breed of smelts than we get here on the east coast....I never ate any of those lake smelts

but usually any ocean fish that make their way into lakes lose some of their taste due to the less salty water...I know around here in Nova Scotia

we have the largest salt water lake in the world the Bras D'or lake and the cod smelts and lobster caught in there are nowhere near as tasty as

the ocean going cod smelts and lobster.

Here we can catch them several ways....in winter we catch them with hook line or nets...in spring they make their way up brooks

to spawn and you can catch them by hand or dip net...by the way they are the only fish that I know of that you can catch by bare hands without

slipping out of your hands...smelts like most other fish are not slimy.
