2011 Shelby GT500 Brake upgrade - opinions welcomed

Recommended Posts

I have a 2011 Shelby GT500 SVT/PP. I do not like the look (all the rotors and rear caliper) of the OEM brakes (Front Brembo ok!) and I’m looking to upgrade them. The brakes on this 2011 Shelby GT500 are:

Four wheel power disc with four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and traction control.

* Front - Brembo 14-inch diameter vented discs, four-piston aluminum calipers.

* Rear - 11.8-inch diameter vented discs, two-piston calipers.

* Tires - Bridgestone Potenza RE960 P255/R35/20

* Rims - FOOSE 20” Legend SS rims all around.

Ok, here goes… In reading all the posts and research I’ve done on my own – I see four (4) options (as price is not a factor). I’d like your feedback and your choice. Please choose 1, but especially please tell me why you made your choice. Performance Vs cost, Value Vs Performance etc. And if anyone has a better option – Please provide that too. ALL opinions are welcomed and if you have any personal experience with one of these options, I'd appreciate that feedback too.

You are like me on this matter. I have decided to go the Wilwood route. Just awaiting a sale to purchase. The reason: the setup is awesome for braking, special proprietary rotors and matched compound pads, looks with color choices, reputation of the manufacturer. They fit on the SVTPP snake as well.

2013 GT500 rear rotors (13.8") and calipers/hardware for about $600.

2013 GT500 6-piston Brembo calipers and rotors/hardware for about $1200.

OEM quality and upgraded calipers all around.

On "Option 2", you have the Rear Upgrade link wrong.

For what it's worth, Option 3 is my recommendation.

Thanks Ohio Snake. That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for. Thanks again.

I'm in the same boat, but have not heard anyone actually install these parts yet.

Tousely Ford has sold a few sets already, just waiting for people to post up. I'm going to order them before Ford jacks the price up like they did on the TVS.

I have the Baer Extreme+ 6-piston front set, and the Eradispeed rear set, soon to be converted to four wheels of Wilwood. Our most aggressive test drivers have confirmed their superiority.

The old adage is: "Ya wanna go faster, ya gotta stop sooner". It's true. When the car gives you a better reaction to stopping, you're more willing to hit the "go" pedal! It's a confidence thing.

Thanks Jer, I couldn't agree more.

It's not so easy going as fast as I do in traffic when I don't have the brakes to back it up.

That settles it! I'm going to have to do the Wildwood set. I'll send pics as soon as I get them installed this winter.

Any chance on a discount? LOL J/K

I corrected the site. The choices are:

Black w/ red lettering

Red w/ white lettering

Nickel-plated w/ black lettering (extra charge)

Thanks for the heads-up!

That's just frickin' WONDERFUL to hear after spending a small fortune on a full set of Shelb/Baers and being told by Shelby that they're the latest/greatest thing to ever grace a Shelby GT500 and/or Super Snake.

Just warms my cuckles, it does.

OK, so I just walked out to inspect a little better, and the lettering on the red calipers is actualy more silvery than white. Sheesh...

Jer,

Same with the Blue calipers (at least on the Baers).

The lettering is a light silver but that's okay with me, it's closer to the dura-bright than white would be.

If it bothered me, I could paint them white easy enough (to match my car/stripes).

Is there any evidence to show the current willows system to be better than the 13 brembos? Also how is the weight? Are they less or more

FYI,

Just confirmed, that the Shelby 1000 uses the Wilwood setup (option 3). :drop:

Go about one minute (1:05 to be exact) into this video to see them (if only for a second!):

Just got my set of Wilwoods today ( Front and back, black with red lettering) going on most likely next week, if it warms up.

We all knew it would happen...

The Baer system is just for show.

The hardcore drivers have destroyed them on a regular basis.

I did the 2013 option and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. The rotors are OEM and can easily be sourced (and turned) for cheap compared to some of the other options. I had Wilwood's on my 89 and the only thing I really liked about it was that I could get the rotor "rings" cheap and I even did have one set turned...not sure if the current rotors can be.

After tracking the car for a couple days this past weekend I'm seriously looking at option 3 as well. One question I have is will the Boss 302 vents still work with the Wilwoods?

Just did the fronts with the Wilwood package, rears getting done this week. The brakes fit the performance package wheels perfectly fine....actually you have more clearance between the caliper and rim.

Any feed back on the Willwood upgrade after having them in place for a while.

Yes on update. They still clamp like a MoFo, very little brake dust and absolutely no squeal. No brake fade has been noticed at all too.
